Google Webmaster Tools gives you access to information about how your website is performing in organic (free) search results on Google. In order to access this information you need to setup an account using the following steps.
- Go to www.google.com/webmasters/, click on 'sign in to webmaster tools' and login
- Click on 'add a site'
- Enter the URL of your website (e.g. www.mysite.com) and click 'continue'
You will now need to verify that you own the website.
If you have logged in using your Google Analytics login, you are a Google Analytics administrator and you are using the Google Analytics asynchronous ('async') tracking code you can verify your Google Webmaster Tools account by clicking the 'verify' button.
If you are not a Google Analytics administrator or not using the async tracking code then you have three options for verifying your Google Webmaster Tools account;
- Add a meta tag to your home page
- Upload a HTML file to your server
- Add a DNS record to your domain
Adding the meta tag is the simplest way to manually verify your account. The HTML file and DNS options are fine, but these can take longer for Google to verify.
Once your website is verified you will be able to click on its URL and see information about keywords, configuration options and more.
