Apart from social media specialists, employers generally prefer employees to spend their own time on Facebook. However Facebook is aiming to change this with a Facebook at Work app set for launch within the year. Facebook at Work has existed for quite a few years with beta testing involving over 100 companies moving it forward about fifteen months ago. Up until now the Slack app has dominated the workplace social media arena, providing casual, and some argue more efficient and productive communication between colleagues.
Switching between Facebook at Work and personal profiles will be easy on desktops but it will function as a separate app on mobile. Some employers might still be concerned about the impact of social media in the workplace on productivity. However adjusting to a more socially interactive workplace may be essential to retaining younger generation digital citizens. It might resolve the dilemma of whether to ‘friend’ co-workers.
